FAQ
Q: I am not an experienced speaker. Is this course for me?
A: TEDx does not select speakers based on their speaking experience, they select speakers based on the originality and validity of their idea. If you’ve got an ‘idea worth sharing’ you will get a lot of value from this course.
Q: I am a seasoned speaker. Is this course for me?
A: TEDx is unlike any other stage you’ve been on. Not only do you only have a maximum of 18 minutes, you must educate your audience with an element of entertainment. TEDx requires you to put forward a new idea or a fresh perspective on an old idea. Even seasoned speakers benefit greatly from learning how to adapt their content to this unique platform and benefit from the clout the brand brings.
Q: I don’t really know if I want to do a TEDx talk. I’m mostly interested in improving my public speaking skills. Will this course help?
A: While we do touch on general best practices, this course is specifically tailored for those looking to land a TEDx talk as a way of elevating their thought leadership and catapulting their speaking career. If you are interested in general speaker training, inquire about Samantha’s 1:1 coaching.
Q: I can’t make all the live sessions. Is it still worth registering?
A: All the theory classes will be recorded and sent directly to your inbox along with the assignment for the week and respective materials. Labs will not be recorded so try to attend those live when you can to benefit from real-time coaching and practice!
Q: How much time will I have to invest each week?
A: At minimum, if you plan to attend the theory sessions and complete the weekly assignments, expect to invest 2 hours per week. If you are looking to maximize this opportunity and attend the labs, as well as integrate the feedback and develop your script, expect to invest 4 hours per week.
Q: Can I expect to have a TEDx talk written by the end of this course?
A: This course is designed to give you the foundational knowledge to write, deliver and market a strong talk. While some students finish the course with a semi-final script, most finish with a strong understanding of what their talk will be about, how to structure it, and the core concepts they want to share with their audience.
Q: What if I need additional support to bring my talk to life once I complete the course?
A: Samantha offers speaker training at an exclusive discounted rate for her TEDx students. Your sessions can be used for content development, content delivery, application guidance and/or marketing support.
Q: I have not started applying for TEDx. Should I join now or wait until my spot is secured?
A: The more time you have to practice, the better off you’ll be. Not only will you be ready to hit the ground running when the opportunity arises, starting the course early may be the energy needed to invite the opportunity in!
Q: Can my existing keynotes or presentations be used for my TEDx talk?
A: The TEDx platform requires new material. While you can leverage parts of existing material (and you should, when possible), it needs to be a new talk exclusively premiered on the TEDx stage.
Q: Can my TEDx talk be used for future speaking engagements?
A: Absolutely! Your talk becomes an evergreen asset and can be adapted as a keynote, workshop, podcast interview, and more.
